Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors are granted the right to question particular rulings made by the official, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the number of reviews a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper admitted it was a tough call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Further Updates

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where fans have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
